Description
The History of RS11 Seeds
RS11 (shorthand for Rainbow Sherbet #11) is a super aromatic, easy-on-the-eyes hybrid feminized cannabis strain with a genetic split of 70% Indica/30% Sativa.
RS11 is just one of the strains that have been brought to the table through the collaboration of three of the best seed breeding collectives in California – Doja Pak, Wizard Trees, and Deep East.
The resulting strain is something to be truly proud of and is a cross of some of the finest new school options to hit the market in the last few years (Black Sherbert, OZ Kush, and Pink Guava).
How to Germinate RS11 Seeds
There are a couple of different methods for germinating cannabis seeds successfully. Some growers are happy to just put the seeds directly into the pots, give them a very light watering, and hope for the best. And while this technique does work most of the time, it does add a fair bit of guesswork. Once those seeds are in the ground, it’s almost impossible to know exactly what is happening until you see the seedling emerge.
Here at Premium Cultivars, we like to use a slightly more involved method. Sure, there are a few more steps to follow, but it’s all very simple. This technique not only ensures that you know exactly what’s happening to the seed during the entire germination process without any chance of damaging the seed or the tap root once it does emerge, it speeds up the germination timing considerably.
Our recommended method of germination for RS11 seeds is as follows –
- Soak the seeds – Soaking the seeds in fresh, room temperature water for a full 12 hours will help to soften the shell and allow water to get inside. This signals the seed to begin germination and speeds up the whole process significantly.
- Grab some napkins – Make sure you only ever use totally unfrageranced napkins, as this will help to ensure that there is no chance of any extra chemicals being absorbed by the seed. A piece of kitchen towel will also work perfectly.
- Gently wet the towels or napkins – Again using fresh room temperature water, wet the napkins and very carefully give them a good firm squeeze. You want the napkins to be moist, but not overly wet. Another option is to give the napkins a light spray with a water mister.
- Lay the napkins out so they cover the bottom of a Tupperware container – Then carefully place each seed in its own little area on the moist napkin. Then carefully cover them with another moist napkin
- If you are germinating multiple strains at once, we suggest using separate containers for each strain – otherwise, it is very easy for them to become mixed up, and if that happens there is really no way to tell them apart. Always label the containers with the strain names.
- Clip the container lid on – come back and check each and every day to see if the tap root has emerged. You want the containers in a dark area in a temperature range of between 75 to 85°F if at all possible.
- If the napkins dry out, re-moisten them – If you let the napkins stay dry, the seeds can and will die pretty quickly.
- Once you see the tap root poke out of the seed – Germination success!
- Get your pots and substrate ready – it is time to plant those seeds and get them into the seeding stage.
Why are Feminized Seeds Better than Regular Seeds?
Unless you are trying to set up some sort of breeding or strain-hunting program, there is really no reason to buy regular seeds.
Why?
Regular seed packs contain both male and female seeds. When growing cannabis crops for flowers, it is only the females that we want. Male plants do not produce flowers, but that’s not the end of it. A single male plant can also quickly (and easily) wreck an entire field full of females. Instead of the flowers were are looking to grow, males produce pollen sacs. When these sacs burst, the pollen is able to spread a pretty considerable distance (up to 5 or so miles depending on the wind speed and direction) and it takes just one, minuscule grain of pollen to birth a seed.
There is no way to tell male and female seeds apart. The only way to find out if a particular plant is a boy or a girl is to spend months of time, effort, and resources growing them to sexual maturity. This is not a quick process at all, and if any do turn out to be dudes then you will most likely have to just chop them down so they don’t pollinate the crop and fill those flowers with unwanted seeds.
Save yourself a bunch of unnecessary hassle and just buy feminized seeds!
Growing RS11 Seeds
RS11 is a great option for growers of any level of expertise. An easy-to-grow strain that provides bumper yields full of huge flowers, and a strain that takes very well a wide variety of both high and low-stress training methods. We will discuss the best stress training methods in a section a little further down.
With a flowering period of between 9 to 10 weeks, you can have your RS11 crop go from seed to harvest in less than 4 months if grown indoors, depending on the size of the plant you are aiming to grow.
Should I Grow RS11 Seeds Indoors or Outdoors?
RS11 is perfectly suited to both indoor and outdoor cultivation, but thanks to the strains’ 70% Indica dominance, it does prefer a slightly cooler temperature range. That’s not to say you can get very satisfying results in terms of both potency and yield in warmer climates, just that she will produce the best flowers when the temps don’t go above the 83°F mark
Growing RS11 Indoors
When grown indoors in perfect climatic conditions, RS11 produces some of the densest and most delicious buds currently on the market.
You will want to keep the temps in the 70 to 80°F range, with the humidity starting at around 65% for seedlings. This relative humidity range can slowly drop down as the plant works its way through the vegetative growth stage, but you don’t want it to dip below the 50% mark until flower formation is in full swing. Once RS11 reaches the last few weeks of growth, it’s best to drop the RH down to around 45% to lower any chance of bud rot developing.
Growing RS11 Seeds Outdoors
RS11 is a great outdoor option and works perfectly in most areas of the continental United States and Europe. If you’re looking to grow huge plants, you will want to get the seeds in pretty early to give them a nice, long vegetative growth period before the sunlight hours drop off and flowering begins.
Keep in mind that RS11 can grow to a particularly large size, so if discretion is key in your area then you will definitely want to use training techniques like the topping, tieing down, and SrOG to maintain a lower height canopy.
How Much do RS11 Seeds Yield?
Indoors, you can expect to pull around 3 – 6 oz/ft2.
For outdoor cultivation, each plant can produce between 5 to 7 ounces
How to Get Better Yields from your RS11 Seeds
There are a bunch of ways that you can boost the yield of any cannabis strain, including RS11.
In terms of cultivation style, hydroponic methods offer the very best yield capabilities. By providing the plants with top-level nutrition at the correct pH value for your style of cultivation, you boost the chances of producing a huge final yield. Then there are training techniques – again, this plant responds super well to topping, super cropping, and ScrOG.
The Best Grow Medium for RS11 Seeds
There are pros and cons to all the different growing mediums, so the answer to this question really comes down to what you are trying to achieve.
But, the medium that we suggest for most growers out there is a cannabis-specific coco-coir blend. Coco-coir is made from the ground-up outer husks of coconuts and offers many of the benefits of both soil and hydroponic cultivation styles. Check out our full coco-coir growing guide right here.
The Best Climate for RS11 Seeds
RS11 is like a Mediterranean-like climate, with lots of sun and temps below 85°F. If you live in an area with a slightly cooler climate and are growing outdoors, we suggest using a greenhouse to grow RS11. This will help boost both the temperature and humidity range, so always keep a hygrometer inside to have a full understanding of these levels.
Problems to Look Out For When Growing RS11 Seeds
As with any cannabis strain, there are certain issues to be aware of for all styles of cultivation.
In terms of common pests, spider mites are the biggest issue to be aware of, but they are far from the only critter that can take up residence in your garden. Pay a lot of attention to the tips and undersides of the leaves, and be sure to get yourself a bottle of Neem oil to treat any infestations you may come across.
RS11 can also be susceptible to fungal issues like root rot or bud rot if the humidity levels are kept too high during its flowering period. To avoid this, be sure to keep the RH below 50% after week 4 of the flowering period.
Nutrient deficiencies are another issue that pretty much every single grower will run into at some point, and while RS11 is no more vulnerable than any other strain, you should always pay close attention to the plants. If you spot discoloration in the leaves, or any other telltale signs of nutrient worries then be sure to have a look at our full guide right here.
Then there are plant viruses, with the main culprit in cannabis crops being the tobacco mosaic virus. This is a pretty rarely seen issue and not something to be overly concerned about, but if you are a tobacco smoker then make sure you keep the cigarettes well away from your crop and wash your hands thoroughly before touching any of the plants.
How Difficult is it to Grow RS11?
RS11 is classed as an easy-to-grow cultivar. It takes well to a wide range of cultivation styles and normally doesn’t require too much fussing over. That said, don’t forget to pay attention to the plant, and make sure you provide all the essential macro and micro-nutrients.
Are RS11 Seeds Suitable for Beginners?
Plant training will help boost the crop, but it does perfectly well just left to its own devices.
A great option for both novice and experienced growers indeed.
The Best Grow Techniques for RS11
With so many growing techniques to choose from, which are the best for RS11?
Topping
Topping is a high-stress training technique that involves removing the topmost shoot of the plant, either by pinching or cutting. By doing so, you force the plant to grow two main colas instead of one and promote a more lateral canopy growth shape.
Topping can be done multiple times with each plant, and each time you top the plant, it will produce two more shoots. This can be done up to four (depending on how long you keep the plant in vegetative growth), with the plant eventually producing up to sixteen main colas.
For our full guide on topping, check out this post.
Super Cropping
Super cropping is another high-stress training technique, but instead of removing a part of the plant, the idea is to strategically “hurt” the plant to get it to produce a more robust plant structure and, in turn, more colas.
By gently but firmly squeezing the stem, you create a bend in the plant which encourages it to take up more nutrients and send those the way of the damaged area. The result is a bushier, less stretchy plant that can fit into smaller spaces that produces more budding sites with a boost in trichome production.
Check out this post right here if you are interested in learning more about super cropping.
ScrOG
ScrOGging is a form of low-stress plant training that allows the cultivator to control the shape of the plant, resulting in a more even spread of light to all the budding sites.
Getting a ScrOG setup going is super easy. All you have to do is get yourself a screen or net, attach it above your grow area, and then tie the main stem and branches to it as the plant grows. This will encourage the plant branches to grow around the net and form an even canopy. This also massively boosts canopy air exchange and essentially tricks the plant into spreading the nutrients and growth-regulating hormones throughout all of the colas.
